From the recording Two Score
Traditional / Dave Shepherd. Arranged by Blowzabella. A dance created by Dave’s father Dick Shepherd in 1951, inspired by figures from the Grenoside Traditional Sword Dance for the first Grenoside Folk Dance Festival, one of many events organised as part of the Festival of Britain. The figures of the dance were inspired by figures from the Grenoside Traditional Sword Dance (Dick danced with the sword team for more than 30 years). At that time the folk dance scene attracted more women than men, and it was socially unacceptable for women to dance together as couples. Dick decided to create a dance for groups of one man and two women, each carrying half-hoops decorated with ribbons. The music used was the second tune from the sword dance called The Broken-time Hornpipe, a version of Roxburgh Castle. Dave has adapted the second and third Grenoside tunes and put them into a minor setting. Dave - violin, Andy - diatonic button accordion, Greg - hurdy-gurdy, Barn - bass guitar, Jo - soprano saxophone, Paul - soprano and alto saxophone, Jon - alto saxophone.
